Change the world

Music

Prof Alethea De Villiers

Welcome to the Music Department at Nelson Mandela University, where we develop and nurture performers, researchers, music technologists and music teachers. We are proud of our motivated and dedicated staff who provide exciting and vibrant musical experiences for our students.

We provide students with a myriad of opportunities to develop as conductors, composers and arrangers. Our students, staff and graduates perform in many music styles, including classical, jazz, African music and popular music. We are proud of our rich music heritage and our diverse music-making environment. The Music Department has numerous ensembles, some of which are student-led, including a String Ensemble, Wind Symphony, three Jazz Bands, Flute Choir, Opera Ensemble, Brass and Horn Ensembles and a student-led orchestra.  Students also form their own bands outside of the university and contribute to the musical life of the city and beyond!

We are an engaged music department as staff and students teach pre-tertiary learners, serve as examiners for Unisa and as adjudicators for music competitions and host international artists as well as perform in our lunch hour concert series.

As a research department, our academics attend national and international conferences,   publish in accredited journals and supervise a growing body of post-graduate students, in a variety of fields, including composition, conducting, music education, musicology and performance!
