Diploma in Music (Curr 2)

This programme is designed for students who do have prior learning in music, but who do not qualify for entry to degree studies, or who, in the opinion of the head of department, do not yet meet the practical and theoretical entrance requirements for the B.Mus degree.  It comprises compulsory modules in main instrument, music theory, aural development, music history, and music teaching methodologies, in addition to which it offers a wide variety of elective modules, including second instrument, choral music studies, orchestration, music technology, and many more.

Admission requirements:

Matric requirements: Minimum statutory NSC requirements for diploma entry must be met; English, Afrikaans or isiXhosa (home language or first additional language) on at least a level 3 (40 – 49%); NSC achievement rating of at least a 2 (30 – 39%) for Mathematics or a 3 (40 – 49%) for Mathematical Literacy.

Music requirements: A minimum practical music standard of grade 3 of the external examining bodies (Unisa, ABRSM, Trinity)is required for instrumental studies, or successful completion of an audition for studies in voice. No prior formal learning in music theory is required.

Duration of studies: 3 years full-time

Careers: Music teacher, performer, composer, programme compiler, music journalist, arts administrator, music librarian or archivist, researcher.

  • Practical Music: Main Instrument (including voice)
  • Music in History and Society

Elective modules include:

  • Music Technology
  • Choral Conducting
  • Creative Movement
  • Practical Jazz
  • Jazz Theory

A selection of methodology modules may be chosen from Music Education, Methods for Main Instrument, Teaching-Learning Strategies for Music Theory, and Aural Development.
