DIPLOMA IN MUSIC (Curr 1)

This programme is focused on the adult beginner where no prior musical training is required. The diploma provides a qualification in music teaching. During the first year, students are exposed to bridging courses in practical music, music theory, music history, English language and study skills and then begin to take mainstream modules from the second year onwards. The programme equips students with a thorough knowledge of music theory and music teaching methods and practical skills in one or more instruments including improvisation in jazz. Students may focus on music teaching, choir conducting and adjudication, jazz or music technology.Successful students also have the opportunity to enter the BMus programme.

Admission requirements: candidates must comply with the matriculation requirements for diploma students as set out in the General Prospectus under the heading: Admission to the University plus a musical aptitude.

Duration: Three years full-time. The programme is offered at the South Campus only.
 

The programme consists of compulsory core modules and a choice of elective modules. Fundamental modules develop students’ study skills, English language skills and computer literacy.

Core modules include:

  • Theory of Music and Aural Development
  • Practical Music: Main Instrument (including voice)
  • Music Orientation and Concept Development

Elective modules include:

  • Music Technology
  • Music in History and Society
  • Choral Conducting
  • Creative Movement
  • Practical Jazz
  • Jazz Theory

A selection of methodology modules may be chosen from Music Education, Methods for Main Instrument, Teaching-Learning Strategies for Music Theory, Aural Development, and Music History.
